2010 Music Survey Results

Rihanna and Shy Ronnie, the latter of whom barely missed our top 200.

Thank you to everyone who filled out the 2010 music survey–77 people in total, over 200 different songs.  If you scroll all the way to the bottom, you will see a list of every song that was chosen by more than one person.  If you would like a list of the 121 songs chosen by friends, you can click here (I’ll upload the student list later).

Now, onto this year’s track list.  As always, if you want a copy of the disc, let me know.

Refresher: the FC12 Music Project started when I wanted to gather favorite songs from my college roommates and their families and turn it into a CD.  We lived in the 12th unit of a somewhat dingy apartment complex called Fountain Circle, hence the name of the project (FC12).  So the final track listing mainly represents songs chosen by them but with some input from friends and even my students.  Here’s the priority list:

  1. Number #1 song chosen by Fountain Circlers
  2. Any duplicates on top 5 lists of Fountain Circlers (meaning a song was on 2 lists)
  3. 1 of the 3 most mentioned songs from all Friends
  4. If only one song from a Fountain Circler’s list has been chosen–and they listed 5 songs–an additional song is chosen from #2 through #5
  5. 1 of the 3 most mentioned songs Overall (Friends + Students)
  6. Editor’s Choice (a song chosen at my discretion)
  7. Others at my discretion, based on fit, sound, smell.

Large Male Child.

1. Big Boi, “Shutterbugg” – Criss #5
If you told me 10 years ago that a member of OutKast would be on our 2010 CD, I would have said: “CDs still exist!?”

2. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, “40 Day Dream” – Stacy #1

3. Sara Bareilles, “Uncharted” – Andrew #1
In my office, I made the argument that Sara Bareilles may have the best voice in the world, as far as I’m concerned.  Andy countered with “Willie Nelson”, so that was a productive conversation.

Sounds just like Willie Nelson except the exact opposite

4. Broken Bells, “The Ghost Inside” – Heather #1
I don’t think my wife would work out if it wasn’t for this song.  I’m only mildly exaggerating.

5. B.o.B., “Nothin’ On You (feat. Bruno Mars)” – Brian #1

6. Lady GaGa, “Telephone (feat. Beyonce)” – Nadia #1
A Lady GaGa song and it wasn’t chosen by Brett?  Color me surprised.

7. Rihanna, “Only Girl (In the World)” – Students #3/Overall #1

8. Florence + The Machine, “Dog Days Are Over” – Friends #1/Overall #2 (tie)

9. Lady GaGa, “Bad Romance” – Brett #1
Yup, that sounds about right.

10. Sara Bareilles, “Basket Case” – Dan #1/Andrew #4

11. Vampire Weekend, “Horchata” – Criss #1
I enjoy Vampire Weekend.  With that said, here are a list of things they talk about: travelling abroad, fancy drinks, professors.

Florence + The Machine - The Machine

12. John Mayer, “Half Of My Heart” – Andrew #3
I listed “OMG” by Usher as my guilty pleasure, but I do feel a bit guilty about enjoying this song so much.  I preach about the guitar playing of Mayer to any of my friends who hate him for his singles and his horndoggery.  Look, no comment on the person, but he’s an incredible musician.  Move past the light rock singles and get to the blues–songs like Gravity and Vultures–and you’ll see it, I tell them.  And then I choose this song.  Whatever.  The ear wants what the ear wants.

13. Katy Perry, “Cailfornia Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg)” – Brett #4/Overall #2 (tie)
Brett chose Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.  Brett, I love you.  Don’t ever change.

14. Lady Antebellum, “Need You Now” – Brian #2/Friends #4 (tie)

15. Ben Folds & Nick Hornby, “From Above” – Dan #3

16. Ry Cuming, “Always Remember Me (feat. Sara Bareilles)” – Blake #1/Stacy #2
I can always count on Blake to choose a song with fewer than 80 BPM.

17. The JaneDear Girls, “Wildflower” – Heather #3

There are 670 people in this band.

18. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, “Home” – Friends #4 (tie)
I felt this song had to be on the album because everyone loved it, yet only 5 people chose it.  There was room.

19. DJ Tripp, “Dynamite Pressure (Taio Cruz vs. Queen and David Bowie)”
I thought this was cool.

20. Nappy Roots “Be Alright” – Editor’s Choice
A former member of OutKast to start it off, and Nappy Roots to end it?  Great way to bookend the 2003–er, I mean the 2010 disc.
